GridSequence

There are plenty of research about how to determine the required sequence for a mixed pallet or mixed model assembly line. However, how to sequence these items in a physical system is not well specified in the industry. Companies using automated storage/retrieval systems try to get the items in the desired order from the AS/RS. But, it does not guarantee the exact order due to the parallel working cranes.

We propose a high density carton sequencing system with a decentralized control. A random incoming stream enters to the grid from the up right corner and each unit moves to a target position according to the required order. When items are ready, they start to leave the system in the correct order. Readiness of the items depend on the departure policy adopted. We can wait for the entire grid to be in their positions or just the consecutive items in the ideal case.

Items start to move to a target column in the first row and then they travel vertically to a target row. Interfering items, which are already in their target position will move left and right with a restricted “puzzle based movement” to allow passage of moving items. Check out the simulation of the GridSequence system.
